In co-working setups, clients can rent individual desks, or choose communal workspace, such as at a long table, closer to others. This new officing option helps some people stay more productive, allowing them to be surrounded by other working individuals who want to maintain a professional environment. Unlike working at a coffee shop, clients who co-work do not have to worry about whether they'll be able to find table space to work or an outlet for their laptops.
People who might otherwise work from home can take important phone calls without worrying about their children causing a ruckus or their family pets barking. These individuals appreciate the interaction they can get at co-working sites, as opposed to the lonely, solitary confinement that is often the case when working from home. At the same time, they appreciate being able to be in a sort of professional environment that specifically suits their needs.
The co-working trend began three years ago in the San Francisco area but has started popping up in markets in across the United States as well as in Europe. Setups vary, but the basic configuration of a co-working space is an open room with desks. Some include seating areas for informal meetings, conference rooms and other closed areas, and amenities such as a kitchenette.
